often can activate

How often can you activate?

You are allowed to install and test Beta 2 on up to 10 PCs. Does that mean, you can activate it 10 times? What if - due to "heavy" testing which results in the need of reinstalling Vista a couple of times per PC you test it on - you would need more than 10 activations? I was also thinking of pro- viding Vista to a fellow who has neither broadband nor a passport account but am hestitating...

Hello,
Re-installing Windows Vista and re-activating it does not count against you.
For example, you could re-install Windows Vista on one computer 10 times, and still be able to install it on 9 other computers.

I was also thinking of pro- viding Vista to a fellow who has neither broadband nor a passport account but am hestitating...

I would recommend that your friend sign up for a free hotmail account, and then use that account to get his/her own product key. That way, they could borrow your Vista DVD and register with their own key. :)

My copy of Windows Vista clearly states: "DO NOT LEND OR MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES OF THIS SOFTWARE" That would rule out lending it to a "Friend" Tell him to order it as he should anyway........

The ISO is freely downloadable from the Internet. 'Nuff said.

Freely downloabable? You mean freely as in Windows Downloads? Not the last I heard.

Than you are allowed to download the file without paying for it doesn't mean that you are free to do anything you want with it. You have agreed to some conditions during the download and installation.

Vista Beta 2 is public. People can download it, and burn it to a DVD. Free.
If my friend didn't have broadband, and wanted to get the beta ... sure, I'd burn him a copy. I'd make him register and get his own key, tho.
I don't see how this violates any agreements.

Ok ... must be my imagination ... I thought anyone could go to microsoft.com and download Vista Beta 2 ;)

As you say people can download and burnt it to DVD for free, after they accept the agreement with Microsoft that says what you can and can't do with it.
If your friend has registered and has his own key then he accepted the agreement and can use Windows Vista. I suppose that doesn't care if he downloads from Internet or uses your burned copy.

Anyone can request the link for the download. But they must also agree to the terms and conditions and provide an email address.

Agreed.

Thanks for all your input! I honestly was under the im- pression that it would be ok to lend him the DVD/make him a copy and even give him the key, thinking of his PC as one of the 10 I'm allowed to install Vista on.
Kai-Uwe

I am fairly certain it depends on the product key you use, but I have heard tell of some product keys only working for 3 activations.
However, that being said, you can request new product keys from microsoft.

My Vista CD from Microsoft states I can load it on up to 6 machines. I assume I can activate it on all 6, but I don't have the hardware to required to try that.

No it doesn't. The product keys all allow for activation on ten different computers.

"Kai-Uwe v. d.
